Let’s face it, when you are trying to be frugal and have a large family, buying clothes and household goods can really take a bite out of the budget. Buying clothes for kids that grow faster than weeds can put you in the poorhouse! That’s why thrifting is so very important to me.
I L-O-V-E a good thrift store shopping trip! Like truly, madly love it. Where else can you get brand names for your children such as Hollister and Aeropostale for as little as $2.07 each?
My favorite thrift store? Goodwill!
Goodwill is right here in my community and they employ some of the nicest people. Did you know that Goodwill Helps One Person Find a Good Job Every 23 Seconds?
- Thanks to the programs and support services made possible by donations of clothes and household items, Goodwill helped place more than 312,000 people in jobs in the United States and Canada in 2015 – that’s one person finding a job every 23 seconds of every business day.
Through its 162 local, independent headquarters, Goodwill collectively provided job placement services, onsite and virtual skills training, and other community-based services (such as English-language training, financial education, youth mentoring and access to transportation and child care) in 2015. Last year, nearly 2 million people engaged in face-to-face Goodwill services to advance in their careers. More than 35 million people accessed education, training, mentoring and online learning tools offered by Goodwill virtually to strengthen their skills and gain industry-recognized credentials.
Goodwill sells donated goods at more than 3,200 stores across the U.S. and Canada, and channels more than 85 percent of sales revenue from donated goods to provide job preparation and placement, education assistance, and other support services for people who are unemployed or underemployed. Employment is more than a paycheck. It’s a resounding victory for that person, their families and their community.
Of course, when you are out buying clothes at Goodwill because your kids outgrew theirs (again!) why not drop off a donation? You know, all those clothes that really don’t fit your monsters children (or you) anymore. Give ’em to Goodwill! What better way to reduce, reuse, recycle?
I load my trunk with a large bag of donation stuff and head off to Goodwill at least once or twice a month. The best part of donating to Goodwill? You don’t even need to get out of your car at many of them! They have a drive up donation spot. A worker will come out and take it right out of your car if you’d like! How’s that for service?
I used to try to sell those old clothes to make a little money, but really who has time for that? Instead, I donate to Goodwill, get a receipt and it becomes a tax deduction. How cool is that? We can all use a little help with taxes can’t we?
So let’s review this:
Goodwill is a great place because:
You can buy really cheap stuff.
You can donate all your unused stuff.
They create jobs for people.
